How We Work

Neighbors in Need is a Facebook group of nearly 3000 Maine residents who work together to assist immigrants new to the state. While our presence together is online, the work happens in person, from neighbor to new neighbor.

The group serves as an exchange of material goods and works in two ways:

1. Those helping our new neighbors may post what they need. Those who have the items reply to the poster.

2. Those who have items to give away may post what they have, preferably with a photo. Those who need those items for new neighbors reply to the poster.

   In both situations, the original poster and replier should follow up directly with each other to get the items to their destinations. We also have access to a storage facility, where we can hold donated items that are not claimed right away from members’ posts. We also, thankfully, have members who volunteer their time and effort to haul items from place to place!
